BUBBLES, SPLASHES AND BIRTHDAY BASHES

You’re invited to have your own splashtacular birthday party at Children of the Sea. With our warm water and air, we guarantee perfect year round party weather (a quality seldom found here in the wet Pacific Northwest). Our friendly staff is happy to help meet all of your party needs.

Parties are held Saturday afternoons and sold in 2-hour blocks. The first hour is spent in the pool and the second is spent in our fully equipped party room. Parties at Children of the Sea are for all ages, no one is too young or old to appreciate the enjoyment of the water. For each party, Children of the Sea provides exclusive use of the pool for up to 20 guests, certified lifeguard, invitations, party bags and balloons for each child. All you need to bring is the cake, drinks and utensils. We provide the clean up! If you would like additional information, please call us.

Q & A

Q. My child has been in WS1 for three sessions and I would like to see him move up to WS2. When will he be ready to move up and what can I do to help his progress?

A. One session of classes at Children of the Seaonly works out to about 6 hours of swimming in a 3 month span of time. If you want to see more progress you need to come 2 or 3 times a week and/or practice at other periods of time. When we started this program, parents requested that classes be just once a week, because it was convenient for them. Kids today are so busy with so many activities, it can be hard sometimes to come 2 or 3 times a week. Progress in swimming, like in so many sports, comes from repetition. If you can focus more attention on practicing and come to more classes, that is the best way to see fast results.

Q. Why is it taking so long for my child to float on his/her back?

A. Balance and floating is the foundation of swimming. The first part of our program develops the fundamental elements of water competency which are balance, floating, breathing, movement and rhythm. A foundation of skills is developed, enabling each swimmer to eventually move unassisted in a balanced floating position, coordinating their breathing in a rhythmical manner. I call this the universal float. From this point, swimmers move into the 2nd part of our program, which is the stroke development.

A comparison to a child floating can be made to a child learning how to ride a bike. Training wheels or a two-wheeled bicycle allow learning to take place for a child who is afraid and unable to ride without assistance. The training wheels provide the support necessary to allow the child to pedal and maintain an upright, balanced position without falling. Confidence, trust and riding skills develop gradually for young bicyclists, just like young swimmers. The child’s balance on a bicycle is the key to riding, as swimmer’s balance in the water is to swimming. Balance is the most important element in learning to independently move through the water.
